In the case of atomic adsorbates (H, C, N, O) or molecules (NH3,CO) on transition-metal based nanostructures, the semi-empirical tight-binding schemes allow to consider complex surface or cluster arrangements that are yet difficult to describe on the ab-initio level. In case of the magnetic-anisotropy-energy, the semi-empirical approach leads to a better physical insight into the subtle experimentally observed behaviour. The effect of adsorbates on the surface magnetism has always localized character and depends on the adsorbate coverage and especially on the energetical distance of adsorbate valence level(s) from the substrate Fermi energy. A major interest in the use of the non ab-intio methods is in the possibility to obtain general physical trends.
