Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) are passive samplers capable of concentrating hydrophobic chemicals from water, sediments, soil and air. They consist of layflat polymeric membrane such as polyethylene containing a thin film of synthetic lipid, most often triolein. In our study, we applied SPMDs for air passive sampling of PAHs in the Karviná city, which is situated in northeast part of the Czech Republic. At the same time, active air sampling was carried out using a co-located sampling device Gast Beckmann. An attempt was made to estimate SPMD sampling rates of these compounds on the base of comparison between the amounts of PAHs sequestered by SPMDs and amounts determinated by the active method. The development of the mathematical model describing the transport of PAHs from the air to the sampling device is also described in details.
