The ability and preparedness of Czech regions to cope with the European (EU) standards and expectations regarding the role regions should play on the national scale are discussed. First, the standards of the European institutions and their expectations as regards regionalization are reviewed, then situation in the Czech Republic as regards the role of regions is characterised and, thirdly, this situation is confronted with the EU's expectations. The paper applies to the situation as of 1999.
