A chapter for an international publication 'Fears in the Post-Communist Societies' focuses at the situation in the Czech Republic. It is introduced by a brief survey of the post-revolutionary sentiments ů from post-revolutionary euphoria and disenchantment of the second half of the 1990s, until the period of realistic corrections 10 years after the democratic revolution. The post-totalitarian mentality of the Czechs is described both in terms of the so-called 'post-totalitarian syndrome' and lively democratic traditions. The main focus is at a systematic analysis of the quality of life of the Czechs in the new situation of democracy and personal freedom. Various worries and fears are listed, namely, basic life worries economic worries, fear of crime, worries about foreigners, foreign countries and terrorism, environmental concerns. Their incidence is substantiated by relevant empirical data of opinion poll agencies. In comparison to the fears of other nations described in the book, the Czechs rather thannfear and anxiety live with rationally founded worries and concerns, which are balanced by a strong belief in the continuation of the democratic process.
