Basic and specific roles of mitochondrial uncoupling proteins are rewieved: reuction of reactive oxygen species production; thermogenesis; regulation of body weight. Pathogenesis involves type 2 diabetes, obesity or heart dysfunctions. Mechanism of fatty acid cycling is discussed.
