A soft, norm-conserving psudopotential for carbon is presented and its performance tested by calculations on atomic states and on diamond: electronic energy levels of different atomic configurations, equilibrium lattice constant, bulk modulus, and the TA(X) frozen-phonon frequency are accuratela reproduced.
