Paleolitické umění obvykle posuzujeme z hlediska našeho vlastního kulturního zázemí. Nicméně, obecně lidské (estetické) aspekty umění by měly být oddělovány od kulturně a funkčně proměnlivých. Přestože lineární a evolucionistický výklad paleolitického umění je v současné době opouštěn, tradiční stylistická analýza neztrácí význam. Více pozornosti je třeba věnovat kontextu umění, a to jak chronologickému tak geografickému.

The Paleolithic art is usually being considered from the perspectives of our own cultural background. The generally human aspects of art, however, readable in the present as in the past, should be separated from the culturally dependent ones. Methodically, even if the linear and evolutionary classification of Paleolithic art is being abandoned recently, the traditional stylistic analysis still remains as an important tool for evaluation. More emphasis should also be lain on the context of parietal art, both in term of chronology and geography.
