The paper deals with the role of computer science in mathematical modelling, as it is performed of the Division of Applied Mathematics of the Institute of Geonics of the CAS in Ostrava. It focuses two areas: In the first part we provide a historical overvies of the computer systems that have been employed in our computations since the very beginning of the Institute until today and demonstrate the impact of the rapid developments in computer hardware both on the in-house modelling software and on practical simulations. In the second part, as another contribution of computer science to the success of mathematical modelling we present several software optimization techniques which, based on the knowledge about modern computer architectures and specific target platform, aim at the increase of efficiency of the solution process.

Příspěvek přibližuje roli informatiky v matematickém modelování, pěstovaném ve Středisku aplikované matematiky Ústavu geoniky AV ČR v Ostravě, přičemž se zaměřuje na dvě oblasti: V první části na jeho zajištění výpočetní technikou, kde podává přehled počítačových systémů, které modelování provázely od vzniku střediska (a ústavu) až do současnosti, a připomíná vliv rychlého vývoje této techniky (počítačů, sítí) na vytvářené programové vybavení i praktické simulace. Druhá část je věnována technikám optimalizace řešičů pro matematické modelování, kde usilujeme o zvýšení jejich efektivity maximálním využitím znalostí o fungování moderních počítačů obecně i o konkrétní cílové platformě.
