Claviceps cynodontis is a widespread parasite of Cynodon (Bermuda grass) in the Paleotropics and -subtropics. Sphacelial stage of ergot on Cynodon dactylon in Mexico and Texas was identified as that of Claviceps cynodontis using comparison of conidial morphology, rDNA sequence and RAPD patterns with an African isolate of this species. Sequence of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 of C. cynodontis was 98.8% and 92.5 % identical to those of Claviceps maximensis and Claviceps sp. SG (from Setaria geniculata), respectively. This is the first identified record of C. cynodontis in the Americas

Claviceps cynodontis je rozšířeným parazitem troskutu prstnatého v paleotropech a subtropech. Anamorfní stadium vývoje bylo nalezeno v Mexiku a Texasu a identifikováno jako C. cynodontis s použitím typické morfologie konidií a porovnání RAPD a sekvence rDNA s africkým izolátem téhož druhu. Fylogeneticky je C. cynodontis příbuzný Claviceps maximensis. Toto je první nález C. cynodontis v Americe
