This article is a first comprehensive survey of its kind to revisit this concept in the early Church, from its antecedents in Greco-Roman philosophy (Aristotle, Stoicism) and Judeo-Christian milieu, to the fully articulated traducianist theory of Tertullian and its impact on later Christian authors, both Latin and Greek, such as Jerome, Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa and Apollinaris of Laodicea.
